Our volunteers gather unused fruit from Salem’s backyards, share the bounty with families who are hungry, and take home free produce, grown right here. We seek to create community and strengthen neighborhood friendships, alleviate hunger, create awareness of our abundant edible landscapes, and promote sustainable lifestyles. We are affiliated with Friends of Salem Saturday Market and linked to Marion-Polk Food Share through donations of produce.

We are seeking energetic, responsible volunteers. Sign up to be a harvest leader, neighborhood coordinator or site scout. We’ll show you how to organize a fruit-picking adventure while meeting neighbors and new friends.

To volunteer, contact Katherine at kdaniels@salemharvest.org. Register your tree, vine or berry bush using our online form, or contact Dick at dyates@salemharvest.org. For information visit www.salemharvest.org or contact Lisa at lclark-burnell@salemharvest.org.

Because of the widening of Kuebler Blvd., there will be some changes in certain areas of SGNA during the next few months. Property has been or will be purchased along the Kuebler Blvd. right of way which is needed in order to widen that beltline and meet state and federal requirements.

One place under consideration is the entrance through the fence just west of Lone Oak Rd. which provides access to Kuebler Blvd. from Khyber Ct. (See pictures below).

If this entrance remains and becomes a part of the widening process, a concrete incline would have to be built with no more than a 7% drop down to Kuebler. The current drop is 3 feet. Because of the 7% requirement, this new concrete incline would have to be up to 60 feet wide. This change would be required because of A.D.A. laws.

If this entrance is eliminated, some adjacent personal property would not have to be purchased, and the City would save approximately $35,000. It has been suggested that walking or riding around the small block, adjacent to that entrance, is a short walking distance and that many people already use that alternative.

If you have any concerns or disagreements with the idea of eliminating this entrance, please feel free to contact SGNA and/or come to our December 10th meeting. Our Transportation Committee will be considering this issue over the next few weeks.

7. PUBLIC HEARINGS (b)

Council Review of Planning Commission Decision for Comprehensive PlanChange / Neighborhood Change / Zone Change 08-15 for property located at 6161 Commercial Street SE – Ward 4 – Councilor Sullivan – South Gateway (CD)

Recommended Action: Staff recommends that City Council affirm the decision of the Planning Commission to approve the request to change the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan Map designation from “Parks, Open Space and Outdoor Recreation” to “Commercial,” “Multi-Family Residential,” and “Single-Family Residential” and the zone district from PA (Public Amusement) to CR (Commercial Retail – 4.67 acres), RM1 (Multiple Family Residential – 10.59 acres), and RS (Single Family Residential – 26.77 acres); and to amend the Liberty-Boone Neighborhood Plan map from “Parks, Open Space” to “Single Family,” Multifamily,” and “Commercial Retail” for property located at 6161 Commercial Street SE. Approximately 2.27 acres of the site will remain designated “Parks, Open Space and Outdoor Recreation,” zoned PA, and maintain its current map designation on the Neighborhood Plan Map.
